What’s different about The Nest Haberdashery?

Brisbane’s most unique, sustainable retail experience

Walk through our doors and you’ll be struck by the cornucopia of colour, textures and designs available. Wander the aisles and you’ll be amazed by the variety of products from deadstock, remnant fabrics, embroidery yarn, knitting supplies, sewing patterns, vintage pieces, sewing machines and more.

But it’s our volunteers who make the experience feel more like raiding Grandma’s sewing room than wandering the lifeless aisles of a major retailer.

The real magic happens when you ask their advice on selecting the right gauge needle for your winter knitting project, how to finish the hem of a skirt or they direct you to an unfinished project (UFO) in the quilting section that’s ‘just for you’.

You see, not only are our volunteers expert makers, they also know our stock intimately because they’ve sorted it by hand as it arrives at our Textile Recovery Centre.

They’ve repackaged every piece of fabric onto rolls, every trim or button onto cards, sorted all the zips and knitting needles by size and then displayed it creatively to maximise the impact of the delicious diversity of rescued materials available.

The Nest Haberdashery is a social enterprise built on circular economy principles that provides an invaluable service supplying low-cost materials for Brisbane’s talented crafters, emerging designers and slow-fashion enthusiasts – or anyone just wanting to get started on their crafting journey

What can I donate to The Nest Haberdashery?

The Nest Haberdashery is the perfect place to recycle unwanted sewing and craft supplies or give a good home to a treasured collection of making materials.

Donations are accepted Monday – Friday 10am – 1pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm. Closed Public Holidays

We appreciate you supporting our social enterprise and would ask you to review our donation guide below as we have limited storage and minimal capacity to dispose of unsaleable items.

For the safety of our volunteers, please remove any unpackaged sharp items and ensure that nothing is contaminated, soiled or partially perished.

Fabrics by piece or roll

Fabric pieces greater than 1 metre in length. Dress, upholstery, craft/costume, or supplementary (calico, interfacing, wadding)

Patchwork and quilting

Fabrics (fat quarters and over), tools, patterns, kits, unfinished projects, finished quilts and quilt tops.

Knitting and crochet

Yarn, crochet cotton, knitting needles, accessories, crochet hooks, limited patterns, unfinished projects.

Tapestry and embroidery

Tapestry wool, canvases and frames, embroidery threads, fabrics and hoops, charts, booklets, kits, finished and unfinished projects.

Other Craft Supplies

Hessian, macramé cord, rug wool and canvas, bag handles, bear and doll accessories (joints, eyes), and millinery materials.

Linens and Doilies

Embroidered or stencilled linens of all types (tableware, hankies) and doilies.

Notions

Buttons, buckles, zips, press studs, hooks and eyes, elastic, velcro, bra cups, shoulder pads, belting, boning, hemming web, cotton tape, curtain tape and rings.

Trims

Bias binding, blanket binding, piping, ribbon, braid, ric rac, fringing, lace, cord, motifs, sequins.

Sewing supplies

Needles, thread, tape measures, gauges, tracing paper, dressmaking pins, safety pins, scissors, snips, unpickers, thimbles, pin cushions, machine accessories (feet).

Equipment

Machines in working order such as sewing machines, overlockers, knitting machines, spinning wheels, transport bags, mannequins.

Special items

Antique, vintage or retro fabrics, patterns, sewing or threads storage boxes, old wooden spools.

Sewing Patterns

Complete patterns only, no cut patterns with pins.

What can’t be donated at The Nest Haberdashery?

Each week we save 4000 litres of fabric and Notions endingup in landfill. Unfortunately we can only accept items that we can sell in our shop.

Books, periodicals or magazines | Curtains, sheers and fittings | Soiled or perished materials | Clothing or furniture | Bedding, sheets, pillowcases or blankets | Household appliances and goods| Jewellery making equipment and beads | Paints, glues, brushes, papercraft | Gift boxes and cards | Toy stuffing

Due to limited storage, please enquire before making larger donations such as bulk fabric, sewing machines, overlockers, knitting machines, mannequins, spinning wheels and transport bags
