Woven

A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY FILM ABOUT THE NEST

How textile waste is being transformed into community impact

Woven is a powerful documentary about The Nest, and how our work in textile recirculation has helped creative skill-building and community connection to flourish in Brisbane.

In a world of fast fashion, instant gratification and disposable everything, this film examines what we’ve lost by forgetting how to make.

Since 2014, The Nest has recirculated over 270,000 metres of fabric through The Nest Haberdashery and distributed free textile resources to tertiary fashion students, high schools and community groups through our programs and sponsorship.

Through the stories of program participants, students, makers and educators, the film reveals how hands-on creativity can build confidence, well-being, and environmental awareness, while strengthening communities and helping reshape our relationship with consumption.

Woven offers an inspiring and practical resource for educators engaging in conversations around sustainability, creativity, and the value of handcrafted goods as a pathway to social and environmental change.

Meet the Filmmakers

In collaboration with The Nest Community, Woven is a documentary by independent filmmakers, Director James Roobottom, Director of Photography Josh Brown and Zed McMahon and Producer Caroline Dodson. The project came to life in collaboration with a small team including musicians, sound engineers, editors and cinematographers.

The documentary offers a glimpse into the lives and stories of secondary school students, tertiary fashion design students, social & community groups, artists, volunteers and leaders who make up the eco-system of The Nest.

It explores themes of connection, creativity, craftsmanship, sustainability, simplicity, patience, and serenity.

As we learned more about this community during the filmmaking process, our commitment to share this model with a broader audience grew. The Nest model is truly inspiring, and we hope that bringing their story to film will help more people get involved.

“I grew up in a house surrounded by antiques where the right to repair was always there. I wanted to direct this project to share the worth behind fixing and creating things yourself and can give more satisfaction than buying”.
